Lucknow manufacturing launch
Ashok Leyland inaugurated its first Uttar Pradesh manufacturing plant in Lucknow on Jan 9, 2026. The commercial-vehicle facility, focused on electric mobility, is designed for up to 5,000 vehicles annually. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath attended the opening alongside Heavy Industries Minister H. D. Kumaraswamy.
The site occupies more than 70 acres in the Sarojini Nagar industrial area near Lucknow Airport. Ashok Leyland identifies rooftop solar panels, LED lighting, battery-powered internal logistics and a zero-discharge system among its environmental provisions.
The earlier investment framework
Ashok Leyland signed its memorandum of understanding with the Uttar Pradesh government on Sep 15, 2023. Infrastructure and Industrial Development Commissioner Manoj Kumar Singh and managing director and chief executive Shenu Agarwal signed the agreement. Its initial production proposal covered 2,500 buses a year, with expansion to 5,000 vehicles over the following decade dependent on demand.
The stock-exchange disclosure specified an initial investment of Rs 200 crore, financed through internal accruals or borrowings. Agarwal separately described potential investment of up to Rs 1,000 crore over subsequent years, conditional on adoption and demand for alternative-fuel vehicles. The initial delivery target was 18 months after land acquisition and statutory approvals.

Groundbreaking and product flexibility
Yogi Adityanath laid the foundation stone at the Kanpur Road factory site on Feb 20, 2024. State finance minister Suresh Khanna and industrial development minister Nand Gopal Gupta attended with Hinduja family members, dealers, customers and suppliers. The project was then identified as the company's prospective seventh vehicle plant in India.
The manufacturing plan combined a primary focus on electric buses with the ability to produce vehicles using established and emerging alternative fuels. Dheeraj Hinduja, then described as executive chairman, linked the project to employment and sustainable mobility objectives. Agarwal anticipated that the facility would address rising electric-vehicle demand and support regional development.

Original development provisions
- Production flexibility extended beyond electric buses.
- The state undertook to facilitate bus sales through subsidiary Switch Mobility for five years.
- Government and company discussions would cover policies for public and private fleet adoption.
At the 2026 opening, Hinduja set a goal of entering the world's top ten commercial-vehicle manufacturers. He put the interval from land acquisition to production at 14 months. Founded in 1948, Ashok Leyland operates in more than 50 countries; Switch supplies electric buses and light commercial vehicles in India and overseas.
